McCook Adventures.

Can you guess what these buildings off in the distance are? No? They are airplane hangars of the past. Part of the skeleton that remains.
The skeleton of this, the McCook Army Air Base from WWII. Trying to find the historical marker for this area was tricky. I took a gravel road at the approximate location only to be led to the actual past air base.
The craziest part was driving along and having the gravel road disappear and instead you are on a crazy wide stretch of cement...yes...part of the road is an old air strip!! Crazy!! We made it back to the highway...markerless. At the intersection however, there was what once was a country school. It appears that now it is a private home and located in the front were two telltale poles of a marker:S
Digging into my knowledge bank I recalled that historical markers cannot be placed on private property. My conclusion is that the marker was removed when the school passed into private hands. Shucks!

Onto inner McCook:) Such a nice drive up Norris Avenue. I like the way the flag is in the middle of the two streets.

The last marker of our trip was found at the city park. The parking was on the opposite side of the park and some people had to use the restrooms. Brenna and I took advantage of the open stage and did a few numbers;)

Hurray for our final marker of the day. This marker celebrates the life and accomplishments of George Norris. He was a part of bringing about the rural electric of Nebraska and a lot more.
Since we were in the neighborhood we stopped and said hello to Georgie boy. Hehe, there he was sitting right outside his house:)
A nice looking house, eh? :)

  1. Alright, no Willa Cather moments in your jaunt to southwestern Nebraska? (Perhaps there are no historical markers that have anything to do with her.) George Norris is good (hard to imagine that people in the 50's were just getting electricity).
