Baby Girl Fuzzy Rag Quilt
Baby quilts are where it is at for me lately! I have finished another!
A friend, whom I have made several quilts for, is getting a niece this summer. I made one for her nephew a few years ago. You can read about it here, in all its fuzzy goodness!
She wanted one similar and the next two pictures are the inspiration ideas she sent.
I went with the rag quilt option like the other one.
I ended up using mostly Moda's Pastel Prairie for fabrics. Such sweet colors and prints!
She also requested some more delicate horse fabric as it is year of the horse.
And she also thought some mountains would be a nice nod to her home state.
I added a yellow corduroy in the corners, a pink minky and a couple of coordinating flannels to round out the fabrics. The holes are for the mountain fabric I had to order more of.
Last time I used the very plush backing minky in the building of each rag square but not this time! Less fuzz everywhere. I found a nice cream flannel and began layering.
Each square is 2 layers of flannel, a smaller square of batting and the pretty fabric.
Rag quilts are pretty forgiving and they go together quickly. Just row upon row!
I have only made two rag quilts so I have not invested in spring loaded scissors for all the snipping.
My scissors have however been recently sharpened and it wasn't hard to get the seams all snipped.
I was so happy with how quickly this was coming together.
So I sewed around the outside edge to the backing.
To get the lovely, soft fluffy effect it must be washed and dried...
As I pulled it from the washer and started the dryer it hit me, there is all cotton fabrics in the top and the back is not. I used to always prewash my fabrics for shrinkage but it isn't often recommended anymore. I should have...
Thankfully the front shrank and back didn't instead of the other way around. But it did mean lots of unpicking stitches. So much for flying right along, haha!
Here it is done now! I simply quilted close to the seams around 5 evenly spaced squares to hold it together.
So precious! I hope they love it!
